The US has a rich tradition for producing outstanding 400m sprinters and the latest talent could be 15-year-old Symone Mason who is the joint fastest in the field.
The Floridian flew to 52.80 when winning the US youth title earlier this month and she will be seeking to land this global title for her country on the fifth occasion.
Matching her on time is Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain, who is no stranger to the international scene. Last year the teenager claimed silver at the Youth Olympic Games and struck 400m gold at the Asian Youth Championships earlier this year.
The best of the rest on time is Roxana Gomez of Cuba with 52.95 while the second-string US sprinter Lynna Irby (53.36) is another with chances.
Other names to keep a watchful eye on are Grenada’s Youth Olympic Games bronze medallist Meleni Rodney and Great Britain’s Catherine Reid.
